@ Todd:

I agree with you. It may not be with belly dancing but certainly dancing will keep you fit as well. I'm a hiphop dancer and I have never experienced going to gym most of the time or anything that most fitness people do.

This quote says it all, "It’s up to us, those important adults, to really BE the role models kids so desperately need and want."
You're right, kids desperately do want us to be role models, they want to look up to us as adults. Furthermore, as they grow older they become disappointed in us if we don't live up to their expectations.

Core fitness is so important because it is literally central to your overall health. I like to rotate my workout between cardio/aerobic exercise and strength-training/abs. That way, my entire body stays in shape.

For strengthening my core, I like to do pilates, yoga (especially hot yoga!) and ab exercises. I usually do these types of exercises 2 times a week from home (I like to watch pilates and yoga instructors on TV) or at the gym (group exercise classes).

I usually do cardio exercise 3 times a week. I am a big fan of elliptical exercise equipment (in fact, I have my very own elliptical in my house so I never even have to leave if I don't want to!)

Lately, I've been flexing my abs as I workout on the elliptical and I have found this to be beneficial to my core muscles, which is a great way to combine both of my workout goals into one routine!

Hi David,

Enjoyed this article. But I have a question: why is running getting a bad rap lately? Everywhere I look, fitness 'experts' are declaring that 'old style' steady-paced running is actually BAD for the body. Running long distances is unnatural; our bodies were built for sprinting, not for jogging, goes the logic. Is there any truth to this? I suppose it boils down to your own opinion, but because this IS an article on running, it would be interesting to hear your take on the matter. Running is definitely getting a bad rap lately......

Fixing obesity with drugs is like patching a leaky bucket, then repatching and repatching it as new problems pop up as a result of the drugs.

The problem really needs to be addressed at the source, by tackling attitudes to food and exercise.
