Eating for Life - Book Review

August 12th, 2008 Posted by David Lemberg

Eating for LifeEating for Life by Bill Phillips is an extraordinary guide to healthy eating, packed with excellent guidance and a vast variety of delicious recipes.

The book’s subtitle is “Your Guide to Great Health, Fat Loss and Increased Energy” and every part of this is true in my experience.

When I took on Bill Phillips’ approach to nutrition - two years ago - I had put on a little extra weight. I’ve always been slim and fit, and even at six feet and 170 pounds, people would say “come on, you’re pretty thin”.

But we all know - inside ourselves - how we’re supposed to look and feel. I knew I was way above my fighting weight. I had increased two inches on my waist size and I didn’t like it. Not at all.

So it was time to start a real food plan. To cut to the chase, I lost 16 pounds in eight months, starting with two pounds lost in the first week. I’ve maintained my REAL weight of 154 pounds for the last year and a half. I feel great, have lots of energy, and have had to buy new pants and a new belt!

How does the Eating for Life program work? It’s so simple, and you’ll say to yourself, “of course!” First, you eat six small meals per day, about 300 calories per meal. Second, each meal contains both protein and carbohydrates, so you’re combining foods that your body expects to be combined. In fact, our metabolisms are optimized for protein-carbohydrate meals. Third, eat as many vegetables as you like. Vegetables are free in this food plan.

You eat about 1800 calories per day for six days, and the seventh day is a free day. The free day is very important. On this day you eat whatever you want, whenever you want. Pizza. Ice cream. Potato chips. Cake. Whatever. The free day tells your body it’s not in starvation mode. The free day ensures your body is going to continue to burn fat for energy. And, the free day is super-fun!

That’s it for the food plan. So simple. As far as the calories are concerned, women might consume 1700 or so per day and more heavily muscled men might consume closer to 1900.

The other main component is daily exercise, five or six days a week, 30 minutes a day. Regular exercise builds lean muscle mass and your body learns to burn fat for energy.

You start to lose weight and keep losing it until you reach the balance-point that’s normal for you. For me, that was at 154 pounds.

The Eating for Life system totally works. The book contains 150 delicious, nutritious, balanced recipes for breakfast, lunch, dinner, AND dessert!

My favorites include Homestyle Turkey Meatloaf, Carrot Cake Muffins, Golden Pancakes, Egg-Cellent Enchiladas and Enriched Double Chocolate Pudding!

Get this book and start looking and feeling great!
